Verna Thomas

Mrs. Verna Thomas, 89, of Kissimmee, Florida passed away on Sunday, January 9th, 2011 at her residence. Verna was born in Nashville, Tennessee on April 23,1921, the daughter of the late Colonel and Mary (Jackson) King. Verna was the oldest of the three children. She had two brothers, Colonel Jr. and Calvin who preceded her in death. She moved to Detroit with her parents and attended Deffield Elementary School and graduated from Miller High School in Detroit. While in high school, she met her future husband, Harold Thomas. He always told her "I am going to marry you". They were married on July 6, 1941 and it was a beautiful wedding. Verna was such a beautiful bride and our dad was a very handsome groom. There marriage lasted for 58 years plus. In their union of love, they had five children. Harold Jr. (preceded in death), Ralph, Sherry, Joyce and Karolyn. Harold (dad) passed away on June 18, 1998. Verna loved people and socializing with her family and friends. People loved her and her warm personality and charming smile. She never met a stranger. People enjoyed just sitting and talking with her and she always had a listening ear and a kind word for them. She loved shopping and eating out. She was always on the go. She enjoyed driving, siteseeing, dancing and attending the Jazz concerts wearing fashionable outfits. We called her a "Fashion Queen". Verna loved Jehovah God whom she dedicated her life by water baptism in 1975. She lived a full and productive life serving Jehovah and loving her brothers and sisters from the Kingdom Hall. She attended the Curtis Congregation in Detroit and the Poinciana English Kingdom Hall until a lengthy illness. Verna moved to Orlando in 2003 and lived with her daughter Sherry and son-in-law, Philip and her little dog, Tutu whom she adored. She enjoyed life in Florida and traveled to California and Texas to visit her daughter Joyce and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She traveled back to Detroit to visit her family and her daughter Karolyn and her family and grandchildren. She loved all her neighbors whom she adored. She leaves to mourn, her son Ralph and his wife (Pearl), her daughter Sherry and loving and supportive son-in-law Philip; daghter Joyce and a daughter Karolyn. She leaves to mourn for her (11) grandchildren: Kim, Rodney (deceased), Derryck, Jon, Terrance, Roderic, Bryant, Joi, Maurice, Mario and Amber. (23) great-grandchildren: Ryan, Derryck, Derryon, Morgan, Mya, Terrance, Justin, Boston, Christain, Alexiz, Ali, Leyah, Alana, Bryant Jr., Rodney Jr., Mark, Raven, Jasmine, Jon, Briana, Capri, Isaiah, Jada and Mona'e. She also leaves to mourn her great nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends that she has touched and met throughout her lifetime. The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 16, 2011 at the Osceola Memory Gardens Funeral Home in Kissimmee from 11am - 1pm. with services to be held at 1 PM. Interment to follow at Mount Hope Memorial Gardens, Lavonia, Michigan.
