George Courtenay Ian Boxill III

Mr. George Courtenay Ian Boxill III, 56, passed away on July 20, 2023 in Kissimmee, Florida USA. Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, Ian, as he was commonly known, was the son of George Courtenay Boxill and Judith Fleming Boxill. Although he was an excellent student and an avid cricket player in his youth, his love for music developed at a very early age. In secondary school, he was founder and front man for The Shades, a rock-and-roll cover band, formed with his brother and two classmates. He went on to obtain his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Engineering Technology from the University of Miami in 1990. While there he served as the student Chapter President of the Audio Engineering Society. Ian had a long career as a sound engineer and music producer with a discography that demonstrates the breadth and depth of his talent and experience in a variety of genres. He contributed to projects for some of the industry’s icons including Prince, Diana Ross, Quincy Jones, Jon B, After 7, Janet Jackson, Aaliyah, KC & Jo-Jo, Gladys Knight, Tupac Shakur and many others. He worked for various studios in addition to creating his own audio engineering and recording space for music and digital media, Room 204 Studios. His talents for recording and mixing jazz, hip-hop, and rap were so well recognized that when Dave Hampton was tasked as the Technical Director for the recording facilities at Prince’s Paisley Park, one of his first calls was to Ian. Ian was quoted as saying, “The two names I’m proudest of when it comes to my body of work in engineering and mixing is Tupac Shakur and Prince – two legends in such different genres of music,” Ian’s body of work resulted in significant recognition, including a number of Grammy nominations, and multiple platinum and gold records. Most noteworthy are his contributions to two songs by Prince. Song of the Heart, earned Ian a Golden Globe in 2007 for Best Original Song for its inclusion on the soundtrack of Happy Feet. Following that, Future Baby Mama, earned him a Grammy Award in 2008 when it won for Best Male R&B Vocals. Ian was a soft-spoken, easy going person who always had a smile. He will be most remembered for his quick wit, laughter, integrity, determination and most of all his love for family and friends. He is survived by his mother, Judith Whittingham, daughter Nia Abreu-Boxill, brothers Wayne and Keith Whittingham and his long-time partner Sweden Aleong. A private funeral service will be held on July 28, 2023 11:00am at Osceola Memory Gardens, 3175 Pleasant Hill Road, Poinciana, Florida 34746.
