Basan Nembirkow

Basan "Buzz" Nembirkow passed away due to heart-related complications at his home in Champions Gate, Florida, on May 8, 2024. Born in Schongau, Bavaria, Germany, on March 16, 1945. A few months later, Basan and his family were liberated from their labor camp and placed in Displaced Persons Camps near Munich in the American Zone of Occupation until 1951. That year, Basan and about 2,000 fellow members of the Kalmyk Community immigrated to the United States, with his family settling in Howell, New Jersey. Basan graduated from Freehold Regional High School in 1963 and from Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) in 1968, where he attended on a soccer scholarship and set numerous school records. He also received a Master’s degree from Rutgers University and completed his coursework for a Doctorate in Education from Columbia University. He dedicated nearly forty years to education in various roles including History Teacher, Physical Education Teacher, Vice Principal, Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and Superintendent. His career took him to Kiana, Alaska; Melbourne, Australia; and several states including New Jersey, New York, Kansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Massachusetts, where he ultimately retired as the Superintendent of the Brockton Public Schools in 2010. Basan leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Maryann (Kuhl) Nembirkow; his son Stephen Nembirkow and wife, Ann Marie, of Ludlow, Massachusetts, and their three children, Caitlin, Cassandra, and Noah; his daughter, Loryn (Lori) Nembirkow Glass and her husband, John, of Manhattan, New York, and their children, Woodard and Starnes. He is predeceased by his parents, Nikolaj and Shara Nembirkow; his brother, Sancha Nembirkow; and his sisters, Edmashka Andreyev, Byarka Pierce, and Lidshma Montedoro. Basan is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. His passing is a great loss to his family, friends and the Kalmyk Community. A Celebration of Life will be held in Howell, New Jersey, with the date is to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tashi Lhumpo Buddhist Temple in Howell New Jersey or Saint Jude Childrens Hospital. Om Mani Padme Hum
