Robert Henry Sutherlin

Robert Henry Sutherlin of Hendersonville, North Carolina passed away on October 21, 2019 at 2:30AM after suffering from a broken hip and developing pneumonia. He was surrounded by his loving family and passed peacefully. Robert (Bob) Sutherlin was born on February 25, 1920 in the small town of Barnard, Indiana. He was the son of Forrest and Vera Adele Sutherlin. He later moved to Manilla, Indiana where he attended high school. After Pearl Harbor he joined the Army Air Corps at Fort Benjamin Harris in Indianapolis, Indiana, January of 1942. He studied to become an airplane mechanic and was sent overseas to North Africa, where he celebrated his 23rd birthday. From there he moved on to Tunisia and to parts of Italy including Corsica and Sicily. He reached the rank of Tech Sergeant and was a crew chief working on B25 Mitchell bombers. After his service in World War II, he returned home to marry Helen Asher his long-time sweetheart on September 15th of 1945. They purchased the grain elevator in Manilla, Indiana where Helen was the bookkeeper and Bob managed the business. He always tried to hire the young men that lived in Manilla, giving them a job especially during harvest times. Those young men have reached out to him over the years expressing their gratitude for giving them a chance to work. He was a Member of Masonic Lodge in Indiana for many years. He was a loving father, father-in- law, husband, grandfather, and great grandfather. Nothing made him happier than sharing time with his family. He was able to do a lot of traveling with his grandsons over the years and had many wonderful visits with his great grandchildren He is preceded in death by his wife, Helen Juanita Asher, Sutherlin who passed October 8th, 2007. He is survived by his daughter, Amelia Drake and son-in-law David Drake of Hendersonville, NC. He is survived by his grandson Aaron Drake of Satellite Beach Florida, his wife Alyssa (Baldaia) Drake, and his great grandchildren, Kagan and Kaya Drake. He is survived by his grandson Jason Drake Tallahassee, Florida, his wife Betty (Paulino) Drake, and great grandchildren Brenna and Asher Drake. Funeral Services will be held Friday, November 1, 2019 at 11 :30 AM at Osceola Memory Gardens Funeral Home in Kissimmee with Reverend Carl Burgner officiating with entombment to follow the services in Osceola Memory Gardens Cemetery. Full military honors courtesy of Osceola County Veterans Council will be provided at the mausoleum. Visitation will be held from 10:30 AM to time of service on Friday at the funeral home.
