Michael Maurice Johnson

IN MEMORY OF MICHAEL MAURICE JOHNSON He was born on August 22, 1989 and immediately became the greatest joy in the life of his young parents, Derrick and Patricia. As he grew, his strength of character and individuality quickly emerged. When his younger brother, Alexander, was born four years later, his role in life was redefined in his mind. This was his baby brother, whom he would protect, teach, and just generally care for. Reading to Alex was one of his favorite things. Giving his parents his sage advice on the care of Alex was his responsibility, one which he never missed the opportunity to fulfill. When his sister, Veronica, was born, he was 11 years old and his sense of responsibility only grew. To say that he watched Veronica like a hawk would be an understatement. Protecting his younger siblings was his calling in life. All the while, he was developing his own personality. Michael loved all things Disney and enjoyed the Universal theme park, as well. But his heart belonged to Disney. His love of life extended to all forms of life: dogs, cats, exotic birds, and reptiles of every description. Michael’s other varied interests included music, aquariums and rare aquarium species, all manner of beach activities including surfing, fishing, camping, motorcycling, paint ball, board games, video gaming, and competition in general. His sense of competition went beyond competitive games. Michael had a unique gift of oratory and he developed into an accomplished debater during his academic years. But his competitive will was not for victory at all costs. Even more than being competitive, he was protective of those he cared for. Michael possessed a spirituality that was expressed in the way he cared about the well-being of others. The circle of those that he cared for included his long-time companion, Katrina Swanson, with whom he shared a special spiritual bond. To everyone in his circle of love, Michael always gave the assurance that “I got you!” He is deeply mourned by Derrick and Patricia Johnson, his parents; Alex and Veronica Johnson, his siblings; Hazel J. Johnson, his paternal grandmother; Frances Goll, his maternal grandmother; Katrina Swanson, his beloved significant other; and countless friends and family.
