A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and woman of deep faith, she leaves behind a legacy of love, humility, and unwavering kindness. Born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, on June 5, 1936, Maria was the daughter of Justo Díaz and Paula Jacobina Santiago. She was the oldest of eleven siblings, with seven brothers and three sisters, and grew up in a home full of life, love, and strong values. As a young woman, she moved to New York City, where she met the love of her life, Adalberto Meléndez. They shared 60 years of marriage and raised four children: Madeline, Jorge, Frances, and Ivan. Maria’s life was anchored in her strong Catholic faith. A devoted reader of the Bible and inspirational literature, she also taught catechism for many years to the children in her Sierra Bayamón neighborhood, preparing them for their First Communion with devotion and joy. Her warmth, generosity, and strength touched everyone who crossed her path. Maria found joy in nature, gardening, trying new foods, and she had a deep love for listening to music, which often filled her home with peace and warmth. She worked in various roles throughout her life, but the one she held closest to her heart was as a seamstress in New York. Her talents extended beyond the workplace—she lovingly used her skills to create clothing and handcrafted stuffed animals for her children and other family members, always with care and creativity. Maria had a truly selfless heart. She was the kind of person who would make sure others were taken care of before thinking of herself. Even with little, she gave generously. If someone was in need, she offered what she had without hesitation—whether it was her time, a meal, or a word of encouragement. Her kindness wasn’t occasional; it was her way of life. Twelve years ago, Maria experienced a serious medical complication from a brain tumor, which left her bedridden. Even then, her presence remained the heart and center of her family—a constant source of peace, love, and unity. Maria is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Adalberto. She is survived by her children Madeline, Jorge, Frances, and Ivan; her grandchildren Elga, Melissa, Nicholas, and Layla; and her great-grandchildren Eli, Hailey, Karsen, Emma, and Alexander. Her memory will continue to inspire and guide all who were blessed to know her. She will always be remembered as a true angel among us—a woman of quiet faith, soft strength, and limitless love. Her aura of compassion and generosity was unmistakable. Esposa, madre, abuela, bisabuela y mujer de profunda fe, deja un legado de amor, humildad y una bondad inquebrantable. Nacida en Bayamón, Puerto Rico, el 5 de junio de 1936, María fue hija de Justo Díaz y Paula Jacobina Santiago. Fue la mayor de once hermanos, con siete hermanos y tres hermanas, y creció en un hogar lleno de vida, amor y valores firmes. Siendo joven, se mudó a la ciudad de Nueva York, donde conoció al amor de su vida, Adalberto Meléndez. Compartieron 60 años de matrimonio y formaron una familia con cuatro hijos: Madeline, Jorge, Frances e Iván. La vida de María estuvo anclada en su fuerte fe católica. Aun teniendo poco, siempre daba con generosidad. Si alguien necesitaba algo, ella ofrecía lo que tenía sin dudar—ya fuera su tiempo, una comida o una palabra de aliento. Su bondad no era algo ocasional; era su forma de vivir. Hace doce años, María sufrió una grave complicación médica a causa de un tumor cerebral, lo que la dejó postrada en cama.
