Herbert Johnson

Herbert Ralph Johnson was born on August 14, 1925 in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. He was the eldest child of Solomon and Mildred Johnson. He was educated at the Lewisburgh All Age School in St. Mary and later completed his primary education at the Troja All Age School in St. Catherine. While in elementary school, he was invested in the Jamaica Boys Scout Organization. As a young man, his primary hobby was bird shooting. Herbert joined the Auxiliary Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force in 1950. He retired as a sergeant after serving for approximately 14 years. Herbert migrated to New York, USA, in November 1963 and became a U.S. citizen in 1966. He passed the GED exam in New York in 1968. While in the U.S., he worked at the Interfaith Medical Center, formerly Brooklyn Jewish Hospital, New York, for 29 years before retiring. Herbert met and married Eunice Pinnock in New York on July 8, 1968. The marriage produced two sons, Christopher and Dewight. Herbert was later baptized in the Baptist faith and read his Bible daily. His faith in God was strong and unwavering. Herbert was a kind and gentle person, always ready to give a smile to whoever he met or was in contact with. He enjoyed watching basketball and horse racing BUT his passion was music. Left to mourn are his loving wife of 43 years, Eunice; his sons, Christopher and Dewight of New York; two older daughters, Paulette and Millicent of New York; and his stepdaughter, Patricia Lindsay of Virginia. He is also survived by his brothers, Clarence, Cassell, and Kenneth, as well as his sister Eulah; six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Herbert is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Dorothy, Carmen, Merline, Ruby, Pearlina, and his brother-in-law, Sidney, as well as a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws, and friends. May the soul of our dearly departed rest in peace and may light perpetually shine upon him in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
