Florence Johnson

Florence Maude Johnson, age 94, transitioned from this world on September 29, 2015. Florence was born on March 11, 1921, in St. Faith, St. Catherine, Jamaica, to Robert Richards and Murelda Harris-Richards. She married Christopher Johnson and bore five children: Wilton Johnson, Evelyn Hylton, Florette Johnson, Albert Johnson, and Neville Johnson. At the age of ten, her mother died leaving three toddlers. Although Florence was the third of six children, she stepped up and helped to raise her younger siblings. When those siblings became adults, they never stopped talking about how kind and supportive she was to them. She was a consummate mother—she loved children, any and all children! She was also an excellent cook, a sharp dresser, and a woman of very high moral standards. Florence was baptized and attended the Four Square Church in her home town. She was a prayer warrior; she got on her knees and prayed every night. She prayed for many things, but her prayer was mostly about her children. She had this child-like belief in God that he would take care of all things. Her favorite saying: The LORD will provide! Florence spent most of her life living in St. Faith. She migrated to England in 1960 to join her husband in Birmingham. She spent ten years in England, where she worked for the company ICI. As she tells it, she was the supervisor’s pet because she did very good work. She returned to Jamaica in the early seventies and remained there until she migrated to the United States in 1974. She lived in Rhode Island until 1983, at which time she moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In 2001, Florence moved to Kissimmee to live with her daughter, Florette. She worshiped at First Baptist Church of Poinciana, and attended adult daycare at the Council on Aging for twelve years. Florence is survived by five children, fourteen grandchildren, and twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and her brother, John. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and all but one of her siblings.
