Eugene Phillip

Introduction It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eugene Phillip, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who departed from this world on morning of March 9th 2024. Life Eugene's journey began on September 21st, 1952, in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, where he was born to Olga Phillip, a dedicated Seamstress and Homemaker, and Eugene (Rufus) Phillip, a skilled Printery Supervisor and musician. As the eldest of three siblings, Eugene, alongside his younger sisters Jacklyn and Georgia Phillip, grew up surrounded by love and the vibrant culture of Trinidad. After completing his education at St. Mary's College in Port of Spain, Eugene embarked on a remarkable career path, following in his father's footsteps. He initially found himself at the government printery of The Guardian newspaper, where he honed his skills. Later, Eugene ventured into entrepreneurship, launching his own publication, "Downtown" magazine, showcasing his creativity and passion for storytelling, politics, and community. Music was Eugene's lifelong companion, and he found solace and joy in its melodies. From his early days with "The Beams" to his later endeavors with "The Host of Others," Eugene's voice and presence illuminated every stage he graced. His passion for music fostered numerous connections and friendships throughout his life. In 1985, Eugene made the bold decision to move to Brooklyn, New York, where he embarked on a new chapter. There, he forged a successful career in publishing, specializing in proofreading and quality control of science books. His dedication and expertise earned him respect within the industry, leading him to work with esteemed companies like Plenum Publishing Company and Harcourt. Outside of his professional pursuits, Eugene remained deeply committed to his faith and community. As a devoted member and Music Minister at Gift of Grace Church, he shared his talents by leading worship services and Bible study groups, guiding others on their spiritual journey. He prided himself on being “in service of Almighty God and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ”. Eugene's impact extended far beyond his professional and religious affiliations. He was a pillar of strength for his family, a source of inspiration for his children. Throughout his lifetime, he impacted many people as a dear friend, a strong mentor, a passionate artist, and a dedicated father and husband. You could depend on him to be welcoming with a broad smile and unending optimism in any situation. Eugene touched the lives of countless individuals, leaving an indelible mark on each heart he encountered. Though Eugene may have departed from this earthly realm, his memory will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him. In the quiet moments of reflection and the echoes of his favorite melodies, Eugene's spirit will continue to live on, guiding and comforting those he held dear. Survived By He is survived by his wife Marilyn Phillip, daughter Renata M. Phillip, sons Eugene M. Phillip (Marvin), and Ethan M. Phillip. His grandsons, Rashaan M. Hill, Eugene E Phillip (Elijah), and Josiah E. Phillip, his granddaughters Nuri Parker, Luz J. Phillip, Yahnessa E. Phillip, and Mia Phillip, great granddaughter Nayla Gonzalez.
