Dorothy Ruth Burke

Dorothy R Burke, age 78, of 724 Knob Hill Circle, Kissimmee Florida died peacefully surrounded by her family and loved ones on Thursday, September 22nd at Select Specialty Hospital in Orlando after persevering through a three year battle with ALS. She was born in Romeo, Michigan on September 14, 1938. Dorothy was the eighth and youngest child of Charles and Lillian Campbell. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Bob, Frank, Ralph, Art, Homer and Russ. She is survived by her only sister, Vera Shelton of Medina, Ohio. Dorothy also leaves behind her faithful husband, Leon J. Burke of Kissimmee along with her children; Dennis L. Burke and his wife Leslie of Pattersonville, NY, April Fleeman and her husband Larry of Shelby, N.C. and Amy Bowersox and her husband Robert of Fruitland Park Florida. Dorothy was blessed with eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren who loved her dearly. Dorothy graduated from Wayne High School in Wayne, Michigan in 1956. After raising her family, she worked with children in many capacities. Dorothy worked as a preschool teacher at First Baptist of Kissimmee and as a teacher’s aide at Reedy Creek Elementary and Buena-Ventura Elementary. She also taught Sunday School for over 30 years at her home church, Calvary Assembly of God in Kissimmee where she was a faithful member for over 37 years. While serving at Calvary, Dorothy also was active in the Ladies Ministry serving as the WM president for many years. Later she served alongside her husband as Care Group Leaders, of young married families. Besides enjoying spending time with her family, Dorothy was an accomplished seamstress, a delicious cook and awesome baker generously sharing these talents with others. During the holidays and special occasions, many received her trays of cookies, fruit cocktail cake and pumpkin rolls. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband and was always ready for a new adventure. Dorothy was passionate about her relationship and love for her Lord and Savior, Jesus and was eager to share the Gospel . She was compassionate and caring towards others and was continually helping those in need. Many besides her family referring to her as ‘Ma Ma Burke’ because of the way she loved them and demonstrated the love of Christ to them through her actions. Instead of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Calvary Assembly of God in Kissimmee to the Missions Program or the Sunday School Department. The viewing for Dorothy will be held at Osceola Memory Gardens, 1717 Old Boggy Creek Rd., Kissimmee on Wednesday, September 28 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be Thursday, September 29 at 10:00 a.m. at Calvary Assembly of God, 711 North Thacker Avenue, Kissimmee Florida.
