Despirena Spencer

Despirena Spencer was born to Winslow and Claris Spencer on July 24, 1942 in Port Antonio, Portland Jamaica West Indies. She attended Oliver Park Elementary School and Titchfield High School. After High School she learned a trade as a dressmaker. She was regarded as the absolute best dressmaker in Port Antonio making children’s uniforms to wedding dresses. Her impeccable skills drew her customers from surrounding towns as far as 30 miles away. In addition to her dressmaker business she also worked as a housekeeper at Frenchman’s Cove hotel in Dolphin Bay, Portland for several years. Later, she joined with her sister Almena in the designing business making children clothing distributing to several stores in Kingston. This business flourished into a thriving wholesale entrepreneurship which extended to household items where she would travel to Haiti, Panama, Curacao to purchase these items for sale. She maintained this business until she migrated to the United States on June 26, 1986. Upon her migration to the United States, she became a Certified Nursing Assistant working at South Nassau Hospital until she retired in 2012 and later that year migrated to FL. Her move to Florida forged a deeply bonded relationship with her sister-in-law Dorothy Spencer and her S.D.A church family Despirena was a fun-loving, kind and caring person. Always willing to give the best of herself to others. Family meant the world to her. She had a hand in the upbringing of most of her nieces and nephews. Some lived with her either long or short term but she extended herself to them all. She was a mother to many though she was only blessed with one son, Winston who meant the world to her. She didn’t have a lot of friends but the few she had remained near and dear to her until her passing. Despirena is survived by her sister Almena, brothers Noel and Cleveland. Her only son Winston and his wife Jackie, three grandchildren, three great-grand children and a host of nieces and nephews. Despirena passed from this life on Sunday, April 21st at 11:30AM from the complication of her illness with her son and daughter-in-law by her side. Our hearts are broken, our lives have all been changed. This void can never be filled but God is our peace and strength. Her memory will live on forever in our hearts and the hearts of those she has touched during her life. May her soul rest in peace.
