Obituary for Carmen Ofelia Irizarry October 18, 1932 – April 26, 2025 Carmen Ofelia Irizarry, born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico on October 18, 1932 peacefully passed away on April 26, 2025. She was a devoted Catholic, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, known for her quiet grace, strength, and deep love for her family. She was the cherished daughter of the late Leoncio Cancela and Marcolina Cantres. On June 22, 1983, Carmen married Ramon Irizarry, in Haverstraw, New York. Together, they built a life grounded in faith, love, and family. Carmen is survived by her loving husband, Ramon Irizarry; her beloved children, Sandra Giraud, Carmen Garcia, and Alberto Serrano; and her son-in-law, Miguel Garcia. She was a proud grandmother to Melissa Maffei, Cynthia Lugo, Jason Giraud, Christopher Giraud, and Raquel Rivera. Her heart was filled with even more joy with the arrival of her great-grandchildren: Jacob Lugo, Jonathan Lugo, Benjamin Giraud, Jaxson Giraud, Valentina Giraud, Evangeline Giraud, and Vivian Rivera. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Carlos Mendez. Carmen dedicated over 15 years to the garment industry in New York City, working tirelessly before her well-earned retirement. Following retirement, she and Ramon packed up a U-Haul and made a new home in Orlando, Florida, to be closer to her daughter Carmen and her family. In Orlando, she embraced her treasured role as "Nana" to her first great-grandson Jacob, and seven years later, to Jonathan. Carmen was known for her gentle spirit, quiet nature, and graceful presence. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially gardening, where she lovingly tended to her plants and adored her favorite peonies flowers. Her nurturing spirit was evident not only in her garden but in the deep care she offered to everyone she loved. Her legacy of kindness, perseverance, and unconditional love will forever live on in the hearts of her family and all who had the blessing of knowing her. Carmen Ofelia Irizarry will be deeply missed and eternally cherished. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Hildi and Rosie, who became like family as they lovingly cared for Ofelia and Ramon after her discharge from the hospital. Their compassion, dedication, and presence brought tremendous comfort during this difficult time. Their support and care allowed Carmen to spend her remaining time surrounded by love in the comfort of her home. We are also deeply thankful to the staff of Cornerstone Hospice Palliative team.
