Beryl "Santa" Phoebe Wright-Broomfield

Beryl Santa Phoebe Wright-Broomfield was called home at age 93, on December 13, 2021. Born on November 1, 1928 in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba Orte. She was the fifth of seven children born to Florence Leanora and John Henry Wright, Sr. Beryl, also known as “Santa”, learned to be independent at an early age when she lost her father at the age of 12. After graduating from school she moved to Havana to study nursing, but a short time later returned to Santiago and found employment in sales and retail . In 1965 she and her sister Linda moved to Kingston, Jamaica to join their mother and younger siblings Nora and Johnny. Kingston became home for Beryl for the next 34 years. She worked in various jobs until her brother Johnny invited her to work with him in the family business, a cafe which they eventually turned into a restaurant. Friends recall that Beryl really loved her work at the restaurant. Being the head cook, she had the opportunity to develop and create interesting dishes. Her unique culinary abilities even drew the attention of some of Jamaica’s superstars. Artists as notable as Bob Marley could be frequently be found enjoying her delicious Cuban/Jamaican cuisine. During this time Beryl also helped family by taking on the role of principle caretaker to several nieces and nephews who she helped raise and nurture with love. She was always known as the “fun Aunt” with the big heart. In the year 2000 she moved to Far Rockaway, New York to live with her sister Nora. Beryl learned her way around pretty quickly and soon found herself studying to become a Certified Nursing Assistant, It was a job that really fit her compassionate personality. Her patients held a special place in her heart and the feeling was mutual. After eleven years of service as a CNA she suffered an accident which left her disabled and Meadow Park Nursing Home became her residence.. At the nursing home Beryl was very active and was known to be a social butterfly. She made many friends and participated in multiple activities. Learning different languages from the other residents was something of a special interest for her. She made it a point to daily read the newspapers in both Spanish and English and was very up on current events. Beryl became close with a roommate who had special needs. they became very good friends and true to her nature she always looked out for her, and she would share whatever she had. A deeply spiritual person she reguarly attended church services and read her Bible daily. A great story teller, she shared many memories and so much was learnt, particularly about family history. Beryl was preceded in death by her Father: John Henry Wright,Sr. Mother: Florence Leanora Wright-Broomfield, Brothers: Vincent, Leslie, Aston,Sr. & John, Sisters: Linda & Nora She is survived by her Nieces: Alina Columbus, Christeen, Florencia, Karen, Michelle & Miriam Wright; Nephews: Aston, Carlos, Dwayne, Mark, Ricky & Robert (Joy) Wright and many grand nieces and nephews
