Alda Maria Ellis

Born in Resource South Manchester to the proud parents Egbert and Hazel Maud Golding, Alda was born on April 26th, 1937. However, on her tombstone May 26th, 1937 will be engraved as her official birthday due to a glitch in government regulations that existed in those days. Alda grew up in a Christian environment and never departed from it. As an ardent member of the Smith field Anglican Church, she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and was the assistant organist for several years. As the 5th child of 8, she learned to do a lot of things that the boys would do since there were so many of them. This is where she developed her competitive edge. She was educated at the prestigious Grove town Elementary school and went on to be successful in all local exams up to the 3rd Jamaica Local. After being employed by the ministry of education for several years she branched off into the medical field. Alda was accepted to the School of Nursing at the University Hospital in Jamaica and graduated in 1964 as a registered nurse and again in 1966 from the school of midwifery as a certified midwife. Alda worked as the head Nurse in several areas in the medical field in Jamaica, then In 1967 she emigrated to the USA. There she met a handsome young chap named Llewellyn “Louie” Ellis and went on to marry each other in 1970. Together they had 3 children; Michele, Bernard, and Lyndon. Having children did not stop her career path. She went back to school to further her education to the Master's level. In 1981 Alda was nominated for the Nurse of Distinction by the State of NY and In 2006 she was appointed as a biographical candidate into the Manchester Who’s Who among Executive and Professional Women in nursing. Also during 2006/2007 she was included in the Honors edition of the Nursing Registry and served on the Incident committee for the developmental disability division. Alda climbed the career ladder to become the Nursing Program Coordinator at the Brooklyn Developmental Center where she worked for 33 years. Knowledge was her power and she encouraged many friends, co-workers, and family members to return to school for professional enhancement. Alda was very kind and thoughtful of others. She was a woman of upstanding character and integrity. As the matriarch of her generation, she was well respected and loved by family and friends. Alda enjoyed a wonderful life with her husband, children, grandchildren, siblings, and family members. On August 26th, 2020 Alda was called home to take her place at the table of the Lord. Her departure from this life was peaceful and she will be missed by many. Alda is survived by her Husband, Llewellyn; Daughter, Michele; Sons, Bernard & Lyndon; Grandchildren, Sahnyah, Simone, Michael, & Gabriel; Brothers, Sylvester, Byron, Lebert, and Emmett; Sister-in-law Bebbe, Sheila, Joyce, Nerissa, Etta and Eileen and a host of Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, and Friends. She was preceded in death by her Sister, Myrtle; and her Brothers, Calvin and Leslie.
