In Loving Memory of Carmen Richards Carmen Richards, whose life was a testament to the power of education and community, passed away unexpectedly on April 30, 2024. A graduate of Elms College in 1964, and later a Master’s Degree holder from Westfield State, Carmen dedicated her life to the pursuit of knowledge and the betterment of others. For 25 years, Carmen’s presence graced the halls of West Springfield High School, where she taught with a passion that ignited the minds of her students. Her commitment to education continued as a school board member in Chicopee, MA, and as the Director of the International Baccalaureate program at Gateway High School in Florida, where she led with vision and purpose. Retirement did not diminish her drive as she continued to impact lives as a Scholarship Program Administrator with the Education Foundation where she helped hundreds of students achieve their dreams. She was a fervent advocate for lifelong learning, teaching adult education classes in four languages, and serving diligently on the Friends of the Library and Retired Educators board of directors. Carmen’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was a devoted member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and the Council of Catholic Women. She lived out the fruits of the spirit, often reminding others that “The custodian is just as important as the principal,” a quote that reflected her belief in the dignity of every individual and the reminder to always love one another. A mind enriched by knowledge and wit, Carmen’s love for learning was paralleled by her competitive spirit on Jeopardy, where she was known as a strong contender. An avid reader, she found solace and adventure within the pages of books, which were her constant companions. Carmen was also passionate about staying active every day, a practice that kept her vibrant and engaged with the world around her. She leaves behind a legacy of wisdom, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to service. She was preceded in death by her parents Jean Bilodeau and Annette Nolette, and siblings Gerard Bilodeau and Therese Bilodeau. Carmen is survived by her sister, Jeannette Bilodeau, her children Ann Marie Glover (John Glover) and Jack Richards, and her many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her memory will continue to inspire and guide us, just as her presence enriched every life she touched.
